Taking Care of Myself

You know what the best thing is about a headache? How good it feels when it’s gone. I’m not there yet – I woke up with a headache this morning and it’s still going strong – but I am looking forward to getting to the point where it has run its course. The weather has been rainy for a few days and that’s expected to continue for the rest of the week. I think the barometric pressure probably triggered my headache.

Whenever I get a headache, I think about this. Headaches always remind me to be grateful for all the days I don’t have one, all the days when I feel good. I think about people who are dealing with some type of chronic pain and how hard that has to be. I am very fortunate to enjoy the good health I have most days.

So today will be a day of accepting how I am feeling and where I am right now. I’ll adjust my plans for the day and just go with the flow. There were some things I was hoping to accomplish today and some of them might not get done. But I will appreciate what I am able to do and take care of myself the best I can. Kindness and compassion are not just for me to show to others. I am learning more and more how important it is for me to show those same things to myself.

“Self-love is the foundation for your capacity to love the other person. If you don’t take good care of yourself, if you are not happy, if you are not peaceful, you cannot make the other person happy. You cannot help the other person; you cannot love. Your capacity for loving another person depends entirely on your capacity for loving yourself, for taking care of yourself. Healing.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh

I hope you take good care of yourself today.
